Measuring
This page will help you measure for horizontal window coverings such as
wood blinds, fauxwood blinds aluminum mini blinds, cellular shades,
woven woods and horizontal sheers. For verticals, the same applies but
remember to allow a little clearance at the bottom!
|
Inside or recessed
mount:
The window covering will hang inside of the window frame and
cover the window glass nearly exactly.
-
Width
- Measure the
EXACT width of the window in three (3) places. Use the narrowest
dimension that results. The factory will make the necessary
deduction (1/4" each side or 1/8" each side for soft shades) for
operating clearance.
-
Height -
Measure the EXACT height of the window in two (2) places. Use the
shortest resulting dimension.
-
Window
depth - The minimum depth for inside mounting flush is in the
specifications of each product.

Outside or wall mount:
The window covering will hang outside of the actual window
opening, generally covering the window frame.
-
If you do
not have trim (molding) around the window you will usually want to
add an inch on each side so the blind will completely cover the
opening with some overlap onto the wall.
-
If you do
have trim (molding) you will generally want to measure the entire
width of the frame including the trim (molding).
-
If you have
trim you can mount above the top molding but need to add enough
height to make certain the blinds headrail clears the trim. (See
each products specifications). This is usually 2-4 inches
depending on the type of blind you are mounting. If you are above
the trim you usually should also order the optional spacers.
-
Width
- Measure the EXACT width of the window in three (3) places. Add
the necessary overlap which is either 2 inches total if you have
no molding or the entire width of the window frame including the
molding.
-
Height
-
Measure the EXACT height of the window from the top of where you
want to mount the headrail to either the top of the window sill
(if the blind bottom rail will land on it) or to beyond the bottom
of the opening if you do not have a protruding window sill. If you
do not have a sill, measure to at least 1 inch below the opening
or to the bottom of the molding (if any).
